How to Groom a Dog at Home

If you own a dog, you know how challenging it can be to groom your pet, especially if he or she gets too nervous when going to the groomer. You might have to groom the dog on your own at home if he or she doesn’t like getting in the car or going to the groomer. This can be problematic if you have a dog that sheds constantly or has quite a bit of hair. Here are some tips for grooming a dog at home.

Use a Familiar Space

Be sure to use a familiar space when grooming your dog at home. This might sound like it shouldn’t be mentioned but it’s very important. You need to choose a room in the home that the dog is most comfortable with. If the dog also likes going outdoors, and the weather permits, take the dog outdoors for the grooming session. This can help with making sure the dog grooming supplies do not make a mess in your home.

Provide Treats

Many dogs will enjoy being groomed. Others will get a little worked up or hyper. You can try to calm their fears by providing them with a treat or two during the grooming session. Treats can be anything you know the dog likes, including a new bone to chew on while laying down getting washed.

Take Care

Since you are likely not an experienced groomer, you need to take as much care as possible when performing this task for your dog. Be careful when using scissors or other sharp objects to cut the dog’s hair. You don’t want to knick the dog and cause injury to the dog that makes it even more difficult to groom them in the future.

The next time you need to have your dog groomed you should consider performing the task at your home so long as you follow the tips outlined in this post.
